The Game Reserve Wines are a socially responsible choice

The premium Game Reserve range of wines makes a significant contribution to sustaining the South African wildlife and wilderness treasures in association with Wilderness Foundation Africa.

These wines, under the custodianship of Rooiberg Winery, contribute significantly to the Foundation from wine sales.

Rooiberg, as part of the Rooiberg Breede River Conservancy Corridor Project, operates in collaboration with various property owners in the area – identified as an important conservation site which forms a natural corridor of leopard and other wild species to interact with one another.

In fact the Robertson-McGregor area has shown the highest density leopard population in expansive studies by the Landmark Foundation – an organization that addresses threats to wildlife and works with the relevant land-owners in this regard.

Eight of the 20 shareholder farms in the Rooiberg fold were selected as having the most conservation-worthy land and form part of the BWI. This comprises more than 15,000 acres of natural land which represents 57% of the total area of shareholders’ farms.

These are but a few of the initiatives that have given the 54 year-old Rooiberg Winery – the custodian of Game Reserve Wines – a track-record of quality wine production in harmony with nature and the interests of the community. It is today a leader with regard to compliance with the relevant clean and green and ethical systems of the South African wine industry and the relevant regulatory organizations.

Allocation of funds from Game Reserve Wines
A contribution of R3 from the proceeds of each bottle of Game Reserve wine sold, is made towards Wilderness Foundation Africa’s conservation and education programs throughout Africa – the benefits of which support biodiversity and cultural, scientific, economic and spiritual values. R2 of each contribution will be spent on general projects while R1 accrues to conservation activities specifically in the Robertson area.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Delightful aromas of sweet juicy melon, pear drop and fragrant grapefruit. On the palate, expect rich rewarding flavours of ripe tropical fruit and luscious citrus. Aromatic, fruity and well rounded – an elegant wine with a soft silky texture and vibrant, fresh finish.
Vineyard Notes
Dryland, low yielding, 32 - 41 year - old bush vines from Paarl and Stellenbosch.
Production Notes
The grapes were left to ripen fully to ensure the development of the rich and ripe flavours and complexity and harvested at 23 - 24° Balling. Destalked, mash cooled with 4 - 8 hours’ skin contact and cool fermentation. A small percentage (7 %) of the Chenin Blanc was fermented in 2nd and 3rd fill 400 litre French Oak barrels to generate an added dimension of richness.
Food Pairing Notes
The Chenin is a good company for alfresco lunches. Also great with grilled chicken or fish, rich pasta dishes and spicy food.
Other Notes
Both threatened and very rare, the riverine rabbit or ‘doekvoet’ (Bunolagus monticularis) is an intriguing mammal, currently classified as highly endangered. Originally thought to exist only in limited areas in the Karoo this elusive creature was discovered in the Rooiberg Breede River Conservancy – the most southern point of discovery to date.
